BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL – HOLY CHILD CONVENT, AMICHI

Holy Child Convent, Amichi was found in September, 2001 with the sole aim of molding and fashioning the lives of adolescent girls towards achieving both academic and moral excellence hence depicting the motto of the school Character and Learning.

Holy Child Convent is a girl's school for girls between the age of nine and seventeen years. Every student is made to be a boarder to allow all round education. This school is run and owned by the Diocesan, The Rt. Rev. E. O. Ikeakor (JP), the Bishop Diocese of Amichi (Anglican Communion)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1.     To foster the spirit of Christian fulfillment and happiness, thereby encouraging the children to grow up in the knowledge and service of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2.      To offer a programme sufficiently wide ranging and challenging in order to produce well exposed, civilized, responsible and disciplined students.

3.     To provide an atmosphere conducive to the achievement of academic excellence.

4.     To encourage leadership qualities such as high moral standards, truthfulness, determination and integrity in all students.

5.     To equip the children with skills for precision in cognitive perceptions thought processes and expression, as well as development of their own individual talents.

     HOLY CHILD CONVENT, AMICHI truly represents a new dawn in Christian character building and all round excellence.

MISSION STATEMENT

As a body with great regards for creating a better society, we aim to providing the most efficient, wide ranging educational / social services through highly trained professionals in consonance with the state – of –the – art facilities in our reach and at the same time, fostering the spirit of Christian fulfillment and happiness into the girl child thereby encouraging her to grow up in the knowledge and service of the our Lord Jesus Christ.

CURRICULUM

The Convent's curriculum covers the National Policy on Secondary Education. It allows the students to study a variety of subjects and also gives them the opportunity to develop their mental and intellectual skills.

STUDENTS ARE PREPARED FOR THE FOLLOWING EXAMINATIONS;

a.      Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)

b.     Senior School Certificate Examination (WAEC)

c.      National Examination Council (NECO)

d.     JAMB

In addition, the Convent encourages the students, who so desire to take the following examination:-

a.      London G. C. E O/l

  1. SAT
  2. TOEFEL.

 

ACTIVITIES OF THE CONVENT

Holy Child Convent, Amichi is known for her busy schedule. She has three terms and each divided into two sections, the first half and second half.

The beginning of every term calls for a re-dedication service for all students and staff including the non – tutorial staff. This goes a long way to strengthen all spiritually.

Proper teaching and leaning commence on the first working day of the term with class exercises, tests and assignments for the continuous assessment, it goes with 40% while the termly examination takes 60%.

ENQUIRES / ADMISSIONS:

Admissions for the new academic year will take place in September. General entrance and examinations are held in April and interviews in May. The common entrance forms are obtained from the Diocese of Amichi secretariat, all Seminaries and Convents and archdeaconry headquarters. Prospective students can also register online.

JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL:

Applicants will be examined in Mathematics, English Language and General Studies. Successful admission will be based on a fair assessment of their performance.

SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL:

Applicants will be examined in Mathematics, English Language and Biology. They will also be required to present the results of their J. S. S Examination. Successful admission will be based on a fair assessment of their performance.

COMPETITIONS

No school can grow on isolation in its true sense. Right from inception, Holy Child swung into action it not for any reason to ascertain her position amongst other secondary schools

(a) Cowbell Mathematics Competition – on yearly basis both at the junior and senior category, students are field in and they came with good performances.

(b) National Mathematics competition - In 2007, Holy Child Convent Amichi took the first position in the junior National Mathematics Competition organized by the National Mathematics Center Abuja by Onyinye Okoli.

(c)   Reading Competition organized by MALTINA – The school conveniently scaled through the examination for the school level, state level sub – geographical level.

(d) NNPC Zonal Quiz – Our student Eucharia Nwosu qualified in the zonal quiz, qualified for the state level in 2008.

(e) 2008 Australian Mathematics Competition – Eight students who represented the school did marvelously well. Two of them werefound in distinction level.

(f)    Battle of Brains Competition – Ikedife Ogechukwu did wonderfully well and was qualified for the 5th International Physics and Mathematics Olympiad, Almaty Kazakhstan.

(g) Bible Quiz Competition – The October 2008 Bible Quiz competition at St. Paul's University Awka saw the school bagging first position.

(h) League of Anambra Professional (LAP) – this was in collaboration with Anambra State Government on 15th October, 2008. The school took the 2nd position.

(i)    2008 National Mathematics Competition – Nwafor Chidmma took the first position and decorated with a gold medal and a certificate. Uzoamaka Ugoama received a certificate.
